It’s a timeless question, and as relevant as today’s news. It addresses the modern-day issues of ISIS, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Russian aggression, and countless other conflicts around the world. Simply stated, “Why are the nations in an uproar …?” (Psalm 2.1) Complex as diplomatic relations between nations are, the key issue is quite simple: “The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, ‘Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!’ “ (Psalm 2.3-4)

A state of war exists between the governments of the world and the kingdom of God. It has always existed, and always will. It’s a territorial dispute in the truest sense of the word. But, the outcome is predetermined: "I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession.’ “ (Psalm 2.7-8)

In sports, there is nothing more exhilarating than being a fan of a winning team. It’s even more exhilarating to be a citizen of the government that ultimately wins. Therefore, there is no wiser advice than this: "Worship the LORD with reverence And rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!” (Psalm 2.11-12)

Knowing the ultimately outcome gives both confidence and incentive. There is a future for those who worship Creator Father with their lifestyle, and who honor His Son. They are head of the system that ultimately prevails when the system of this world is conquered. And, that victory is well underway today, in spite of skirmishes that will likely make today’s news, and tomorrow’s. None are so blessed as those “who take refuge in Him!”

May the wonderful insights and assurances that Psalm 2 give us be your confidence and incentive today. May His kingdom come, His will be done, on earth as it is in heaven - in this world, and in our lives.
