Heavy rain and flooding are not unusual in many places, but they are rare in the desert Southwest where I live. Thus far today we have experienced historic rain; more in one day than since the beginning of weather records. And, it was largely unexpected. Rain was predicted, but nothing of this magnitude.
"For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.” (Matthew 24.37-39)
It is amazing how quickly normal life routines can be disrupted by calamities. Modern society, with its need for access to public utilities and technology, is especially vulnerable. It is much too easy to assume that comfortable routines and lifestyles will continue, when one natural event can disrupt all. More importantly, it is important to remember that the Day of God’s ultimate intervention will burst through with abrupt suddenness. They key is, how prepared are we for that great event?
For the prepared, there is nothing to be more greatly anticipated than they day when the skies open, and the Son of God gloriously returns. For the unprepared, there cannot, and will not be, a greater disaster.
This day where I lives serves as a very significant reminder of how abruptly things can change. The reminder in Scripture of the coming Day of the LORD challenges us each to be prepared. Are you ready for God to send His Son back to planet earth?
