Silence is golden, perhaps because it is so rare. The siren calls of our age easily drown out silence. Urgent text messages. Email notifications. Blaring news reports. Pervasive social media. Words about silence seem foreign to our eyes and ears.

"My soul waits in silence for God only; From Him is my salvation ... My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him." (Psalm 62.1,5)

Waiting in silence often seems like an exercise in futility. Beyond the noise of technology is the noise of our mind. Thoughts dash around like young children at play. Insignificant tasks suddenly seem urgent.

I've lately noticed that if I hope to have a half hour of quiet time with my Father, I need to devote an additional half hour to preparing for it. For me, it takes that long to quiet myself to even begin to enjoy quietness with Him.

A divided life is a distracted life. Sure, there are details to be tended to every day of our lives: paying bills, studying at school, working diligently at our job, investing in our families. But, amidst it all, is there a quiet center where we often commune with our Father, and His Son? Is there refreshing, rejuvenating silence with Him that replenishes our drained soul?

Out of silence, may we find renewal in purpose and grace to renew and refresh others around us.
