December 1, 2015

It is a very touching scene. A father sees his long-lost son approaching from a distance, and runs to welcome and embrace him. No matter what the son had done, he was warmly welcomed because he had a change of heart and had come back.

The scene described is from a story once told by Jesus, the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15.11-32). The point to the story is the priority placed on lost ones being found. "there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." (Luke 15.10) "this brother of yours was dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found." (Luke 15.32)

Whatever we have done, or wherever we have been, there is hope for us when we have a change of heart, repent, and return. The Father's arms are open wide to receive His wayward children.

Perhaps your life has gotten all dirty from worldly indulgence. This is a grievous situation, but especially so if you never repent and return. But, this very moment is an opportunity for forgiveness and a new beginning. All you need do is return to your Father and, as His Son said to a wayward woman, "Go. From now on sin no more." (John 8.11)

None of us are so bad that we cannot be forgiven, but none of us are so good that don't also need to repent and return. Whatever your life has been, the opportunity of the moment is what matters most. Return to your Father, and truly live.
